If the phrase "transit oriented development" makes you happy, you'll want to know about a workshop set for 10:30 to noon next Thursday, May 20, at the U.S. Bank Building. Chris Zahas, a Portland-based planner, will talk about successful TOD principles and how they might apply here in Boise. Think "mixed use, walkable, location-efficient development in scale with the adjacent community and with sufficient density to support convenient transit." The State Street corridor is one such area being eyed for possible TOD in our town. Surely there are others, too.

This is great! I would love to be just one of thousands in Boise who walk to get places. It can be challenging to find a quiet, safe path to get where you want to go. In my neighborhood it involves cutting through parking lots, between office buildings and across empty lots (the ones they thought they'd build on a couple years ago). Planning for walking in Boise would make it easier, safer and more appealing to walk. That would give me some company out there when I'm huffing and puffing around town.
Cindy, your neighborhood sounds a lot like mine: lots of concrete to cross, except where we'd really like some (aka sidewalks).
On the Jane's Walk a few weeks ago, we talked about how excellent it would be if we could just convert a few of the empty lots downtown into nice live-work blocks. And there are definitely lots like that on major thoroughfares all across Boise ...
